Academic Traditions & Unique Events

The University of Oxford, with its rich history dating back to the 12th century, is renowned not only for its academic excellence but also for its unique and enduring traditions. For example, central to Oxford’s educational approach is the tutorial system, where students receive personalized instruction from tutors in small, one-on-one or small-group settings. Students and faculty at Oxford also wear traditional academic dress, including gowns, caps, and hoods.

Social traditions are important, too. Many colleges hold formal hall dinners, where students and staff dine together ceremonially. Traditional speeches and toasts often accompany these dinners, and students wear formal academic dress… And the college rowing teams participate in annual bumping races, a traditional form of boat racing where crews attempt to “bump” or catch up with and overtake the boat in front of them!

All of these traditions and ceremonies play a significant role in shaping the university’s identity and fostering a sense of community among students and faculty. Learn more about them below.
