The Christ Church Meadow Walk Tree

Oxford Trees: Church Meadow Walk’s “Tree”

This very special tree can be seen on the Christ Church MEadow walk. Here's how to find it (and why we Oxfordians love it so much).

This majestic tree is a 15-minute walk from the Rose Lane entrance to Christ Church Meadow. Alternatively, you can see it from the Shire Lake Ditch (if you’re on a boat). Many people report they travelled to Oxford just to see Tree, and you will find plenty of stories about people getting engaged here. But… what exactly is Tree? Well… as a visitor said: “Among all trees in Oxford, this is one of them.”

Why Should You Visit Tree? (Should You?)

Tree has an imposing presence. Its roots sprawl on the water, a solitary presence that will bring you incomparable tranquillity. This tree is not just a botanical specimen but a cultural landmark! Don’t believe me? Just check some of the reviews:

When I saw Tree on the map, I felt her calling to me and immediately set off to visit her. My arduous journey from Australia was not without reward. Having been in the divine presence of Tree, I feel a strong sense of peace and calm. Thank you, Tree.

After finally making the pilgrimage to Tree, we are lost for words. For 28 years we have been longing for this moment, pulled towards this magnificent, great beauty. Her mythical proportions leave you paralysed, caught in the embrace of her tender branches.

We had the privilege and honour of finding this whilst walking through an uninspiring city. We came round the gravelled path and behold the wonder of ‘The Tree’. No other tree could compare to the utter magnificent glory of this tree. It even needed a brace to hold itself up under the great weight of its beauty. Forget diving on the Barrier Reef, bungee jumping in New Zealand, admiring the splendours of Stone Henge or visiting the wonders of the world. A walk to see ‘Tree’ has to be at the top of your bucket list…
