The University of Oxford’s “Full Term” consists of three terms of eight weeks each, during which the majority of teaching occurs. These dates are consistent across the university; however, certain programs have extended terms beyond the standard Full Term dates. So, let’s take a look at the most important dates to keep in mind.
The Three Terms of Oxford
The University of Oxford has three terms in its academic year—Michaelmas, Hilary, and Trinity—to balance teaching, research, and student vacations. This traditional structure is rooted in the university’s medieval history and has remained largely unchanged over centuries.
The three-term structure mirrors the seasonal cycles of medieval England, originally influenced by the rhythms of agricultural and religious life. They were, in fact, established to fit within a broader calendar that allowed for both study and necessary breaks for festivals, farming seasons, and travel.
Each term consists of an eight-week “Full Term,” during which teaching (lectures, tutorials, seminars) is concentrated. This allows for intense, focused learning in shorter bursts.
Flexibility for Different Courses
The system accommodates diverse academic disciplines and study needs. Some programs have extended terms to allow for additional research, laboratory work, or clinical training, but the standard three terms provide a clear framework.
Research students, like those pursuing a DPhil (PhD), often work outside the standard term dates. Certain undergraduate and professional courses, like Medicine or Chemistry, may also have longer terms to accommodate lab work, clinical rotations, or other program-specific activities.
