Regattas, Mini-Golf, and More

Sports & Events in Oxford

Oxford is a perfect place to do sports and engage in physical activity (or, why not, take a look at others practising them!). There’s rowing and regattas, golf, various parks and meadows to exercise… a myriad of sporting events in Oxford and its surrounding areas. You can see some of my favourite activities below – including lessons, competitions, and events you can join as a spectator.

Oxford Rowing Races & Regattas

Oxford rowing races and regattas are integral to the rich sporting culture of the University of Oxford. Key events include Torpids and Summer Eights, both bumping races where boats chase and “bump” the one ahead to move up the rankings. Torpids take place in early spring, testing rowers’ endurance after winter training. Summer Eights, held in late May, is the highlight of the rowing calendar, featuring intense competition and vibrant college spirit.

The Christ Church Regatta in November introduces new rowers to competitive racing. Additionally, the Isis Winter League keeps rowers active during the off-season with time trial head races.

The city offers a wide range of sports activities and facilities catering to various interests and skill levels. Rowing on the River Thames, punting on the Cherwell, and cycling around the historic city and countryside are popular. Cricket can be played at University Parks and local clubs, while tennis courts are available at parks and sports centres like Iffley Road. Football and rugby pitches are widespread, with local clubs and leagues providing competitive opportunities. Swimming facilities are found at Iffley Road Sports Centre and local leisure centres.

Athletics can also be practised at the historic Iffley Road track, and indoor climbing is available at Oxford Brookes University and other centres. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy courses around the city.
