The Gladstone Link is an underground library connecting the Bodleian Library with the Radcliffe Camera. It opened to readers on 5 July 2011. The tunnels in which the library is located were previously known as the Underground Bookstore. These tunnels were used for transporting books between the Old Bodleian and New Bodleian libraries and to the Radcliffe Camera. The books were transported using a conveyor.

The Gladstone Link was named in honor of the Gladstone family, particularly William Ewart Gladstone, the former British Prime Minister and an Oxford alumnus, who was known for his love of books and libraries. The facility is situated beneath the Radcliffe Square, with its design carefully crafted to integrate modern functionality with Oxford’s historic environment.

The project involved the refurbishment of two existing underground book stacks that had been in use since the early 20th century. These stacks were originally designed to store vast numbers of books, and the Gladstone Link modernized these spaces into a user-friendly library extension.

About the Gladstone Link

The Gladstone Link provides an innovative and flexible study environment for students and researchers. It is a multi-level space offering a mix of open-access shelving for collections and a variety of study areas. These include both individual study spaces and areas for group work, all within a contemporary setting that contrasts with the historic ambiance of the Radcliffe Camera and the Old Bodleian.

One of the unique features of the Gladstone Link is the use of the original “Gladstone” book shelving system, which was invented by William Gladstone’s father, John Gladstone. These shelves are a distinctive part of the library’s character, combining historic elements with modern design.

The Gladstone Link is also fully integrated with the Bodleian Libraries’ digital systems, allowing seamless access to both physical and electronic resources. It connects the Radcliffe Camera and the Old Bodleian Library through a series of tunnels and staircases, making it easier for students to access the extensive collections housed in these historic buildings.
